Experience

A Licensed Architect, Mr. Salmen has more than 30 years of experience in barrier-free and universal design. He founded Universal Designers & Consultants Inc., an architectural accessibility consulting firm specializing in environments and products usable by people of all ages and abilities. He represented the American Institute of Architects on the ADAAG Review Federal Advisory Committee and was a voting delegate to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging. Mr. Salmen is one of the leading experts in the technical aspects of the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Standards. He is a voting member of the International Code Council/American National Standards Institute (ICC/ANSI) A117 Committee and a member of the Editorial Committee for the A117.1 Standard for Useable and Accessible Buildings. During his career, he served as Technical Director of the National Center for a Barrier Free Environment in Washington, D.C., and as Director of Technology & Information for the American Hotel & Motel Association. Mr. Salmen has authored several books and presented hundreds of seminars and keynote addresses throughout North America and the Pacific Rim on universal design and accessibility.
