Experience

A Certified Fire Investigator, Mr. Schaal has 30 years of experience in fire and explosion-related investigations. He specializes in forensic fire investigation, including fire scene investigation, case management, technical review, and litigation advice. During his career, Mr. Schaal served 27 years as a Special Agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, where he specialized in fire and arson investigation. As a Program Manager in the State and Local Training Branch, he was responsible for fire- and arson-related training programs for state and local officers. Additionally, he participated in the assessment of fire and arson investigative capabilities in the Republic of Colombia and the Republic of Latvia and participated in custom training in the Republic of Colombia. As Chief of the ATF’s Arson Training Branch, Mr. Schaal maintained oversight of all ATF arson and fire investigation training programs, including training of the ATF Certified Fire Investigators. Throughout his career, he has attended thousands of hours of training and coordinated and instructed numerous programs both in the United States and internationally. As part of research and training initiatives, Mr. Schaal has participated in some 230 training and demonstration live burns.
